UAE qualify for Bangladesh WC T20

UAE joined Afghanistan, Ireland and Nepal to become the fourth team to seal a berth for the ICC World Twenty20 2014 in Bangladesh after an impressive bowling effort helped them beat the Netherlands by 10 runs at the Sheikh Zayed Stadium in Abu Dhabi on Wednesday.
UAE had been restricted to a modest 117 for 8, but the bowlers rose to the occasion as Netherlands ended up on 107 for 9, with Nasir Aziz (3 for 21) and Shadeep Silva (1 for 9) sharing four wickets among themselves. UAE, who opted to bat, lost three early wickets inside the first seven overs to be 37 for 3. Khurram Khan, the captain, was the fourth wicket to fall and his dismissal put the side in fresh trouble. Khan, batting at No.3, had top-scored with 32, but he fell to Ahsan Malik, the medium-pacer, and soon UAE found itself 69 for 5. It took a vital 43-run stand for the sixth wicket between Mohammad Shafiq (25) and Asim Khurshid (17) to give the total some respectability. Malik returned figures of 4 for 17 in his four overs. “To be honest it was not a par score, it was a small target. I personally thought we were short by 20-25 runs on this wicket; it is on the slower side,” said Khan. “But our bowlers, Manjula and Shadeep bowled their hearts out in first six overs especially. They gave them only 14-15 runs which brought us back in the game. From there on if you look at fielding performance, it was brilliant with tough catches taken and three run-outs. So it was a wonderful team effort as all contributed to this important victory. “I am very thrilled with the win. It was a very important game for us, we spoke about it and since we were playing at home we knew the importance of this game as it would take us to Bangladesh. Thanks to the whole team putting in wonderful performance, especially from bowling department — they bowled their hearts out,” he added Netherlands got off to a shaky start, losing both openers inside the first three overs. Wesley Barresi (11) and Eric Szwarczynski (23) then had the task of steering the innings to safety. However, after a 26-run third-wicket stand, Barresi fell to Aziz. Michael Rippon and Ben Cooper kept the fight going with run-a-ball stand of 32 for the sixth wicket, but when Netherlands lost three more wickets in 2.2 overs, the match swung UAE’s way decisively. “We did well to restrict them to 117, but I don’t know, we did not just play a positive brand of cricket like we normally do. It can happen when you are chasing with a big goal in sight which was to qualify and still is. We still have a shot at qualifying tomorrow; looks like we just got a bit scared of it and did not back ourselves,” said Borren. UAE will face Ireland in the semifinal on Friday, while Netherlands take on Scotland in a must-win clash on Thursday.

Ronaldo injured after scoring in Real win

Cristiano Ronaldo opened the scoring in Real Madrid`s thumping La Liga victory over hosts Almeria before limping off with what he described as "a knock".
Ronaldo touched in from Isco`s cross in the third minute, but hobbled off at the start of the second half. Real boss Carlo Ancelotti said: "I don`t think it`s important. He wasn`t in pain. I think he will recover soon." Karim Benzema scored Real`s second before Gareth Bale, Isco and Alvaro Morata wrapped up a comfortable win. The victory leaves Real six points behind leaders Barcelona, who beat Granada 4-0. Ronaldo, 28, will have further tests on his injury on Sunday ahead of Real`s Champions League game against Galatasaray on Wednesday. The Portugal forward made the most of poor Almeria defending to guide in from Isco`s ball from the right and score his 35th goal in 25 appearances. But, largely thanks to fine goalkeeping from Esteban, the visitors` advantage was kept to one goal at the break. They stretched clear despite Ronaldo limping off, though, with Benzema collecting the ball at the end of a Jese run and scoring from the edge of the area. Bale seized on Sebastian Dubarbier`s error to score his fifth goal since joining from Tottenham in the summer. Isco then

Vinod Kambli suffers heart attack

Former Indian cricketer Vinod Kambli was admitted to Mumbai`s Lilavati Hospital, following a heart attack on Friday.
Kambli was taken ill while he was driving from Chembur to Bandra and suddenly stopped the vehicle. A policewoman on duty, Sujata Patil noticed he could not drive and arranged to rush him to Lilavati Hospital. Hospital sources say he is under observation and undergoing various tests to determine his health condition. Kambli had undergone angioplasty on two of his blocked arteries in July 2012. Kambli featured in the famous 664-run stand with Sachin Tendulkar for their school Shardashram Vidya Mandir in February 1988. The flamboyant left-hander hit two double-centuries and two hundreds in his first eight Test innings after earning a debut in 1993, but another three-figure knock in Tests eluded him. Kambli played the last of his 17 Tests in 1995 before he had turned 24, finishing with 1,084 runs at an average of 54.20. He also scored 2,477 runs in 104 one-day internationals with two centuries. Kambli announced his retirement from international cricket in 2009 while he retired from first-class cricket in 2011.
